This easy apple tart recipe is inspired by a recent trip to Amsterdam, Holland. Made with a buttery crust and a warm spiced apple, raisin and sultana filling, this apple tart is the perfect cosy dessert. Simple to make, delicious warm or cold, and ideal for sharing. Ready in just over an hour!
Time: 1 hour 10 minutes Serves: 8-10
Ingredients
For the apple tart crust
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup (120 g) unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
For the apple tart filling
- 4 apples
- ⅓ cup raisins
- ⅓ cup sultanas
- ⅓ cup sugar
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- Zest of 1 lemon
Method
- Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F. In a large bowl combine the flour and sugar. Add the cubed butter and work it with your fingertips into a crumbly texture.
- Add the beaten egg and mix with your hands until smooth. You can add a few drops of cold water if the mixture seems dry.
- Shape the dough into a ball and place in the fridge whilst you prepare the filling.
- Peel and chop the apples into small pieces and place them in a big bowl. Add cinnamon, sugar, lemon zest, raisins, and sultana raisins and mix until combined.
- Take the dough out of the fridge and butter an 8-inch pan. Place ¾ of the dough into the pan and press it onto the bottom and sides of the pan. Make sure it is thinner at the bottom and thicker on the sides.
- Pour the filling into the dough shell.
- For the remaining dough, flour a flat surface and roll the dough into long thin ropes to create a lattice design top for the tart.
- Brush the top with cream or egg-wash.
- Bake the tart for about 40 minutes on the lower rack of the oven.
- Allow to cool before removing from the pan and enjoy!
